POLICY REQUIRED READING FOR JOB APPLICATION - Step 2 of 3 Forms Employees are required to print and complete all required forms - Click Here to view the forms. You will only be required to fill them out AFTER you have been qualified directly by our recruiting staff and offered employment. Initial Evaluation Period and Payday Prospective employees are expected to read the company literature on Role Definition provided at the start of the trial period w/ SkyTop Builders. It is by these standards that performance and compensation will be gauged. If it is determined within the first week / day that the agreed upon wage rate is excessive for the level of performance, reevaluation may result in an adjustment and/or dismissal. SkyTop Builders determines ALL wage and compensation rates. Evaluation periods vary based on candidates workloads outside of their obligations to SkyTop Builders. Some candidates that start as prospective employees wind up working on a periodic basis instead. This is driven by the needs and abilities of both parties. Once a candidate becomes an employee, they will be paid weekly on Friday for the previous week. In the event Friday is a bank holiday, management will inform employees when payday will be. The agreed upon wage rate will be paid to the employee times the number of hours deferred one week to allow for processing by an outside payroll service. Therefore, the employee will receive pay for the first week of the month, during the second week of the month on Friday. The use of this payroll service requires the employee to designate a bank account of their choice for direct deposit. Note: If there are problems with the outside service [i.e. - technical problems], pay will be received on the next available business day where the service is resumed. Notice to Carpenter Candidates: SkyTop Builders is a professional work environment and people who profess to be at a given level (see role definitions) are expected to perform according to those definitions in terms of Safety, Quality, Speed, and Professionalism. This is not a practice environment where a new employee can try to attempt things they have never done before in an effort to fool their new employers. This results in a waste of material and wages. We’ll call this out and resolve it by releasing the new candidate or repositioning them in a lower role that is more suitable Drugs Illegal drug use and alcohol are not tolerated in our work environment. Evidence of illegal drugs use is grounds for immediate termination. Any prescription drugs that bear a warning label that has an impact on a worker’s job as we’ve defined them [see Apprentice - Lead Man at left sidebar] should speak directly with an owner and discuss the hazards. EVERY EMPLOYEE MUST BE WILLING TO SUBMIT TO RANDOM DRUG TESTING - refusal to submit is grounds for immediate termination. Failing the drug test which includes positive results for illegal substances is grounds for immediate termination. Work Hours Work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Lunch is 45 minutes @ about 12:30 PM. If a coffee break is taken, it will be 15 minutes at about 9:30 AM - in which case, Lunch will be reduced to 30 minutes. Workers are to be on site and working by 7:30 AM. Any adjustments to this work schedule must be discussed with an owner. Workers are expected to work a 40 hr work week. Generally there is no overtime Time Sheets Time sheets are tracked with the use of jobsite clocks. The employees will be prompted during their orientation the use of the time clocks and compliance is mandatory. A set of plastic tabs [one green for clocking in and one red for clocking out] that connect to a key ring will issued to the employee. These are issued at no cost and should be returned upon completion of employment. Lost tabs will require replacement at the employees expense. The fee for each set [one green for clocking in and one red for clocking out] is $25. Additionally, jobsite tracking will be handled with the use of other jobsite documentation which will be covered after the initial evaluation period. Vacation, Sick, Personal Days Employees are allowed 5 unpaid vacation days annually. Employees are allowed no more than a total of 3 absences and/or late days per quarter. Typical holidays are usually unpaid days off however work will be scheduled if necessary for project scheduling. Employees MUST speak directly with their job manager AND an owner if they choose to call in for a day off. This must be done before 8:30 AM for that day. Messages on answering machines do not count. All managers are readily available by cell phone and this contact must take place. If the employee does not make contact minimally with an owner, they will receive no pay for that day and will receive a warning. Tardiness Tardiness or being late will not be tolerated. Work begins at 7:30 and all workers are expected to be ready and working by 7:30 AM. Notification for Sick Days or Any Time Off Employees MUST contact an owner directly and speak with him prior to 8:30 AM on the sick/personal day. Failure to do so is grounds for termination. As noted below, workers are not eligible for any paid days off the weekday before or following a holiday unless some advanced notice was given Vacation time must be made a minimum of two weeks in advance. Employees MUST contact an owner directly and speak with them in order to secure the time off requested. Current Client Sales and Potential Client Sales As an employee, it is expressly forbidden to address any aspect of sales while employed by SkyTop Builders with anyone other than an owner. Distribution of sales material [including business cards] and pitches to the client requesting additional work on any of SkyTop Builders job sites is expressly forbidden. Any inquiry regarding work specific to residential construction made by individuals stopping by the job site should be directed to an owner of SkyTop Builders. Any job contracted [even a moonlighting engagement or “side work”] that results from an inquiry made on any of SkyTop Builders job sites is expressly forbidden. Any violation of these guidelines is grounds for immediate termination and substitution. Client Property SkyTop Builders does a bulk of its work for clients in residential construction and remodeling. The following rules apply to the protection of the client's property and how employees should handle themselves as temporary "guests" in or customer's homes:
Transportation All employees are required to have their own transportation to the job site. This means a vehicle that they can drive on their own with a valid driver’s license. Job Site Behavior All employees need to behave professionally while on site. Foul language is unnecessary and is absolutely forbidden in front of the client (this is particularly the case when children are around). It is always good practice to avoid profanity in order not to "slip" at the wrong time and offend a client adult or a child. Story telling should be limited to break time unless the teller can keep it brief. Building and remodeling requires considerable focus and stories are distractions. Each employee will need to find the appropriate level of chatting with coworkers in order to maintain an acceptable level of production and quality. If this cannot be achieved, the Lead Man will address the situation and the employee will be given an opportunity to adjust. THE JOB SITE IS A PROFESSIONAL WORK ENVIRONMENT. IF THE WORKERS AT CITIGROUP, GOLMAN-SACHS, MICROSOFT, OR SEARS CAN DO IT, SO CAN BUILDER/REMODELERS. ACT PROFESSIONALLY, AND CLIENTS/POTENTIAL CLIENTS WILL TREAT YOU PROFESSIONALLY. THIS ULTIMATELY TRANSLATES INTO HIGHER EARNING POTENTIAL FOR ALL EMPLOYEES If the employee cannot comply, they are undermining the representation of the company as a high quality group of professionals. Repeated offenses are grounds for termination. Dress Code Over the ankle boots are required at all times unless they are removed when in a clients home for cleanliness purposes. All employees are required to wear clothing that is in decent condition. For example, shirts without tears or large stains should be worn. Clean thick cloth pants without stains, rips, or worn knees are required. Shorts are allowed. Workers are to show up to work clean and groomed. A worker will be sent home if these items are not adhered to. Repeated offenses are grounds for termination Cell Phones Currently, workers are allowed to have their phones on them during work. In the upcoming months, a policy that requires the worker to leave their phone in their vehicle will be implemented. Any emergency contact will be done with the Site Supervisor whose phone number will be provided to each worker on that site so they can pass that information along to someone who might need to make an emergency contact. Workers will be allowed to check their phones during breaks, which are at the discretion of the Site Supervisor. Smoking General Smoking in NOT permitted inside any customer's home, regardless if they are smokers or not. Smoking is permitted outside only when proper ventilation exists and it is not a fire hazard (i.e. - smoking while working under a front porch is a fire hazard. Smoking while doing vinyl siding is not). If the smoke is offensive to another employee or subcontractor working in the direct vicinity, the smoker MUST stop smoking until that person moves to a different area. Smoking breaks a completely at the discretion of the Site Supervisor. IF AT ANY TIME, THE LEAD MAN FEELS THAT SMOKING IS IMPEDING THE PRODUCTION OF A PARTICULAR EMPLOYEE, THEY WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL BREAK TIME TO SMOKE. Butt Disposal Smokers will dispose of their garbage by extinguishing the butts and throwing them into garbage containers. Abuse of this policy will result in the following: First offense - warning. Second offense - $1.00* fine per cigarette butt found by Lead Man. Third offense - $5.00* fine per butt found by Lead Man. Fourth offense - the employee will be terminated. In the event the smoker's butts cannot be differentiated between another employee's butt's, the fines will be split up into equal parts and a notice is served to each smoker. Those employees can work out a process by which the job site will remain clean of cigarette and cigar butts in order to prevent additional warnings. In the event the client smokes and disposes of their own butts on the ground, the client will be advised of our policy and will be asked to comply. * Money collected goes into that job's break "kitty", where it can be used to pay for coffee, lunch, etc. What the money is spent on is at the discretion of the Site Supervisor. If the attitude of the crew is lacking, the collected money will be donated to a local charity or church. Smokeless Tobacco Chewing is NOT allowed inside any client's home. Chewing is allowed outdoors only, and tobacco juice is to be discharged on natural earth surfaces only (i.e. - grass, dirt, mulch. Not sidewalks, driveways, patios, etc.). Chewers are afforded the same breaks as smokers when they are working in non-chewing areas. The refuse tobacco will be disposed of the same way butts are and the same rules apply for different offenses. Repeated offenses against any of these rules are grounds for termination. Salvage Salvage of items from any job site is prohibited without the permission of your supervisor. This does not include permission of the client. Salvage rights to all materials or items removed from the job site belong to the company unless the materials and other items are to remain the property of the client. Employee salvage is permitted and welcomed, provided it is cleared by the supervisor. Items so covered are to be removed from the job site or office immediately. Equipment and Tools Workers are expected to have a hammer, tape measure, and nail bags as a minimum. The compliment of tools outlined under the Tools section will help the workers become more productive and more versatile. This can be translated into additional income depending on the project. Our company will allow a worker time to accumulate this specific list of tools. As they secure tools, workers are required to have the tools specified with them each day. The goal is to get workers outfitted so they can perform more complicated work and achieve a higher compensation grade.
