Roles    Apprentice / Carpenter I / Carpenter II / Carpenter III / Lead Man

Apprentice/Helper

Expected salary $16K - $23K [that’s $7.50 - $11.00/hr]

Expected quality level: Highest

All candidates are expected to comply with all Standards and Policy items to the best of their ability.  As in any profession, methods and practices are to be learned as the employee works with their crews over time.  Clean up procedures, bench set up, storage practices, break down routines are typically consistent.  All employees are expected to learn and retain the routines.  This ability to learn and retain is fundamental to all roles at

Inspects, repairs, installs, modifies, rebuilds, constructs, and maintains woodwork and other related structures at the lowest level. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent with 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. May have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a another carpenter or Lean Man.

Performs absolutely no sales, client management.  Some people are less adept at performing carpentry functions.  This may lead to disappointing progress and a certain level of aptitude is expected.  If progress is slow, this will be addressed.  The absolute basics for this role are:

Know the basics of hammering and nailing

Be able to use a circular saw, sawzall, and power drill

Know basic math and fractions

Have their own transportation

Be able to function at different heights

Create a simple lumber list

Sheetrock a wall with minimal supervision

Have good listening skills

Carpenter I

Expected salary $23K - $34K  That’s $11.00 - $16.00/hr [See it on Salary.com]

Expected quality level: Highest

All candidates are expected to comply with all Standards and Policy items to the best of their ability.  As in any profession, methods and practices are to be learned as the employee works with their crews over time.  Clean up procedures, bench set up, storage practices, break down routines are typically consistent.  All employees are expected to learn and retain the routines.  This ability to learn and retain is fundamental to all roles at SkyTop Builders

Inspects, repairs, installs, modifies, rebuilds, constructs, and maintains woodwork and other related structures. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. May have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty with 2-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a Lean Man.

Performs absolutely no sales, client management, or team development functions.  A Carpenter I must be able to:

Read a basic blue print

Frame a gable roof

Hang a door in 30 minutes or less

Shingle a roof at least 50 SF per hour

Side a standard wall at least 50 SF per hour

Create a basic lumber list

Sheetrock with expert proficiency

Know how to size a header

Have expert proficiency with power tools

Know how to lay out a floor framing system

Trim a door in 15 minutes or less

Install kitchen cabinets that a level and plumb and nick free

Know the basics of plumb, level, and line

Assemble a basic material list with 10% waste or less

Carpenter II

Expected salary $34K - $40K  That’s $16 - $19/hr [See it on Salary.com]

Expected quality level: Highest

NOTE: MECHANICS AT THIS LEVEL MUST BE ABLE TO BUILD IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL LOCAL GOVERNING CODES.  WORKERS AT THIS LEVEL AND UP SHOULD NEVER FAIL INSPECTIONS

Workers at this level must be capable of running the job site that they are on.  It is also the responsibility for this worker to keep the job stocked with the appropriate material and tools.

All candidates are expected to comply with all Standards and Policy items to the best of their ability.  As in any profession, methods and practices are to be learned as the employee works with their crews over time.  Clean up procedures, bench set up, storage practices, break down routines are typically consistent.  All employees are expected to learn and retain the routines.  This ability to learn and retain is fundamental to all roles at SkyTop Builders

Inspects, repairs, installs, modifies, rebuilds, constructs, and maintains woodwork and other related structures. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. May have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty with at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks. Directs and leads the work of others. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a Lean Man.

Is starting to perform sales functions in the post sales capacity  Can deal with the client under the supervision of Carpenter III.  Is not responsible for team development but should be mentoring Helpers and other carpenters. 

Read all aspects of a residential house blue print

Frame a gable roof

Hang a door in 30 minutes or less

Shingle a roof at least 100 SF per hour

Side a standard wall at least 100 SF per hour

Create an advanced lumber list

Sheetrock and spackle at expert proficiency

Build a deck framing system completely

Know all aspects of trim carpentry (casings, base, crown)

Install kitchen cabinets that a level and plumb and nick free

Expert at plumb, level, and line

Compile any material list with 5% waste or less

Carpenter III

Expected salary $40K - $44K That’s $19.00 - $21.00/hr [See it on Salary.com]

Expected quality level: Highest

NOTE: MECHANICS AT THIS LEVEL MUST BE ABLE TO BUILD IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL LOCAL GOVERNING CODES.  WORKERS AT THIS LEVEL AND UP SHOULD NEVER FAIL INSPECTIONS

Can perform all the functions of a Carpenter II and is adept at all aspects of the residential construction process.  Can take a project from beginning to end with little supervision from others.  Actively performs sales functions including initial sales and post sales.  Manages the client and can do accurate estimates.  Is completely accountable for work on assigned projects.  Is capable of running multiple projects.  Here are examples of what a Carpenter III must be able to do:

Read any blue print (including mechanicals and electrical)

Frame a hip roof using math or a framing square

Hang a door in 30 minutes or less

Shingle a roof at least 100 SF per hour

Side a standard wall at least 100 SF per hour

Lay out a balustrade

Build a set of stairs

Create an advanced lumber list [entire house]

Sheetrock and spackle at expert proficiency

Compile any material list with 5% waste or less

Figure an estimate in terms of time for self and helper

Frame a complicated deck system with appropriate bridging

Frame a ceiling system for flat or cathedral ceilings

Expert at all aspects of trim carpentry

Install a mortise lock in 1 1/2 hour or less

Install kitchen cabinets that a level and plumb and nick free

Build a Formica countertop complete with sink cutout

Draft a change order

Lead Man / Site Supervisor

Expected salary $54K and up That’s $26.00 plus [See it on Salary.com]

Expected quality level: Highest

NOTE: MECHANICS AT THIS LEVEL MUST BE ABLE TO BUILD IN ACCORDANCE WITH ALL LOCAL GOVERNING CODES.  WORKERS AT THIS LEVEL AND UP SHOULD NEVER FAIL INSPECTIONS

Workers at this level must be capable of running the job site that they are on as if it were it’s own business unit.  Fixed cost project management is not uncommon at this level.  It is also the responsibility for this worker to keep the job stocked with the appropriate material and tools.

All candidates are expected to comply with all Standards and Policy items to the best of their ability.  As in any profession, methods and practices are to be learned as the employee works with their crews over time.  Clean up procedures, bench set up, storage practices, break down routines are typically consistent.  All employees are expected to learn and retain the routines.  This ability to learn and retain is fundamental to all roles at SkyTop Builders

Maintain a project plan and production schedule

Frame a hip roof using math or a framing square

Hang a door in 30 minutes or less

Shingle a roof at least 100 SF per hour

Side a standard wall at least 100 SF per hour

Create an advanced lumber list [entire house]

Sheetrock and spackle at expert proficiency

Manage all subcontractors

Figure an estimate in terms of time for self and helper

Frame a complicated deck system with appropriate bridging
